It brings together a group of international artists who question urbanism from the perspective of sound art. Here is the statement.

Text by Isis Fahmy, Duncan MacDonald et Benoît Renaudin / English version below.

English Version

As soon as a sound is created, it dissipates into space. The same is true when we try to define physical, conceptual, and spiritual frameworks for it, to eventually achieve some form of psychological equilibrium, sound thwarts all such reassuring definitions to fill the memory (especially since the introduction of recording and playback technologies). How and why do we organize, remix, and study the urban layers of sonic clutter? What new knowledge might be created in the process? Cairo, which is considered the second noisiest city on the planet, is filled with noises that have an abundance of political, social, existential, and practical meanings. From a car horn and its lexicon of diverse meanings, to the calls of vendors announcing their wares with unique stamps, sound plays a powerful role in daily negotiations here. How might artists structure and utilize this cacophony for artistic creation while critically examining its original hearing and contextual framework? Furthermore, how can sound events be mapped and echoed with political, social, and practical meaning – resonating long after a sound has faded into memory? This international grouping of artists working with sound explores everything from the mundane to the sublime, researching acoustheology as a foundation for art, design, and technology-encouraging audiences to consider orality as the key to creating knowledge.

Thus, we propose to create a specific event where the exhibited works and the artists coming from Egypt and Switzerland will be able to explore the city of Cairo through sound and enter into a dialogue in turn. The curatorial program will therefore propose an exhibition that will integrate different formats (sound installation, video, performance, etc.), produce a catalog that will document this research, and create an online blog for more complementary work on the subject.
